A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

However these probabilities had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in positions right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
